Traders Coffee House is owned and operated by native New Yorker Brenda McDonnell. Brenda’s background is in Pizza… creating it, serving it, and watching her customers enjoy it. The coffee house was part of a two story building that Brenda leased in 2001, solely for the purpose of opening her own Pizzeria. When she took over the building there was a gift shop upstairs and a coffee house downstairs that had been closed for a year.
Although she was only interested in opening a pizzeria, she was asked by then owners Paul Sprenger and Jane Lang to keep the coffee house going because they really believed that a coffee house was needed at the Lake. Because they had been such wonderful mentors to her and believed in her ability to run both enterprises, Brenda deferred to their wishes, steeping herself in the coffee business, while getting her pizza shop open.
In 2004, with the help of Sprenger Lang, Brenda tore down the existing building to expand the usable space. She again deferred to the wishes of the Sprenger / Lang and decided to expand the coffee house even further…creating a space where locals and visitors could feel comfortable gathering, holding meetings, and more. For Brenda, who was also married during that spring, it was the beginning of a hectic, busy time. The original coffee shop was a small, quaint space with only 20 seats and a large deck for outside seating. Although Brenda never saw herself in the coffee business, with the help ofher mentors and financial partners and her wonderful, creative staff, Traders Coffee House has become one of the most popular destinations on the lake.
Brenda was able to purchase the building in 2007 and as with the Pizzeria upstairs, she has surrounded herself with a remarkable and talented staff. Through ongoing training and visits to Food Shows, Coffee Expos and more, her crew is up to date on the latest trends and have worked hard to bring the latest in technology (free wi-fi), ambiance (great music), and delicious food and drink to their customers. The drink boards change seasonally with specialty lattes and hot chocolates in fall and winter; iced lattes, frozen drinks and iced teas in the summer. The Baristas often create many of the specialty drinks you’ll find on the menu and all of their coffees are roasted and shipped weekly.
Traders also features a wide assortment of seasonal bakery items, all baked onsite daily. Always aware of changing customer needs, you’ll find a wide variety of healthy options as well, including delicious breakfast muffins and several gluten free items.
The coffee house also offers a nice menu perfect for a quick breakfast or lunch, as well as beer and wine options. Ever eco-conscious, all coffee served here is organic, all their to go cups and containers are bio-degradable and they recycle as much as possible.
Ray Oldenburg wrote a book saying that someone’s first place is their home, second is work or school, and the third place is somewhere else they feel welcome and comfortable. Brenda believes that Coffee Shops are like some people’s third place -- a place of community and social networking. And in the past several years, Traders Coffee House has become that and more.
